SNACK: Killer Garlic Wings at J.R.’s Old Packinghouse Café

J.R.’s Old Packinghouse Café feels like the kind of spooky bayou roadhouse that you might imagine Hank Williams frequenting during his Drifting Cowboys days. Antique ceramic tchotchkes and weathered beer promotions take on the qualities of talismans in the dim dining room, and the clanging and clamor of the semi-visible kitchen keep energy levels high. The years of memorabilia nailed to the walls help our rapt attention while we waited for the real purpose of our visit: wings. Killer Garlic Chicken Wings to be precise, straw colored stumps of crispy chicken, chunks of garlic falling off of them and doused in tableside “Alligator Alley Asphalt” hot sauce. The garlic flavor sits on top of the actual wings, which means once you get past that smoky garlic layer, the chicken is tender and mercifully plain. One person might have trouble running down an entire plate of these, but it should do perfectly for a two-man beer night. Pair it with something off the Packinghouse’s not-inconsiderable beer list and some of their regular live music and it’ll be like having “real fun on the bayou.”
